About the Hike:
Gap Mountain offers one of the closest and best views of Mt. Monadnock to be found. The trail to the summit is part of the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail, which stretches from Connecticut to Mt. Monadnock. From the kiosk at the parking area, bear right onto the M-M Trail. The trail starts flat, leading through the forest. It soon crosses the old Gap Mountain Road, then a small brook. In half a mile, bear left where Donovan Trail goes to the right. The trail now begins to climb. In 0.3 miles, where a spur leads to the right to a limited viewpoint, the trail turns left and ascends, soon entering an area of low bushes, to the ledgy north peak of Gap Mountain, where there are restricted views. This is 0.6 miles from the first viewpoint. The trail makes a quick drop into the forest, then a short ascent to the middle peak of Gap Mountain, 0.2 miles from the north peak. This peak is generally considered the summit of Gap Mountain, although the south peak is higher. Now there are much better views. Although partially restricted by bushes, there are fine views of the Monadnock Region in two directions. Views are especially fine of the Wapack Ridge, and, of course, Mt. Monadnock.
